JChurchGrayscI have been drawing, designing and doodling since a young child. After graduating from University of Virginia (B.S. in Commerce/Marketing, Minor in Art History), I landed in the marketing and advertising department of a large financial services firm. Then along came the first Persian Gulf War and the accompanying economic downturn. The silver lining? We couldn’t hire outside designers so I became a staff designer and have never looked back.

After two decades working as a graphic designer at The Washington Post and Evans Design (Bethesda, Md.), I switched to freelancing. Having always created illustrations for my design work, in 2007 I began focusing on illustration — specifically children’s book illustration. In 2011, I illustrated the e-book “Goose on the Loose,” a picture book for early readers, by Byrne Publishing. I live and work in Northern Virginia with my husband and three children, and whole lot of dust bunnies.

Member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) since 2009.
